I have an idea for a project but don’t know where to start, what should I do first?

A Business Case helps shape the aim and limitations you want to set – so it doesn’t get unwieldy.
The Stakeholder Map, which is a free download, helps you identify who you need to consult about your idea and doing the work to achieve your project.
Now that is clearer, you can start organising activities which is co-ordinated through the Project Plan.

The Budget Plan sets out what you think it may cost to make your idea happen and helps you track the actual expenditure in purchasing or in time (people power).

How long should a Stakeholder Map plan be?
Most are 1-2 pages. Key point is identification and listing of stakeholders so that they can be reflected upon and engaged appropriately for project success.
Do I need a project plan before the Stakeholder Map?
Not necessarily. They can evolve in parallel. Often projects start off with a list of things to do and people that are needed and goals. The development of the Business Case, Stakeholder Map, and Project Plan organise these ‘random’ elements into a potentially successful project.
Can a small community group write their own Stakeholder Map without a consultant?
